The Replaceable Rim Protector That Sets It Apart

BBS CH-R is a flow-formed wheel that carries two features directly borrowed from motorsport use: back-milled spokes and a replaceable stainless-steel rim protector. The rim protector is the detail that makes the CH-R particularly practical for road use - it absorbs kerb contact and can be replaced if damaged, leaving the structural barrel undamaged. This is a feature BBS introduced from its GT racing programme, where wheel barrel protection has direct consequences for on-track safety.

Flow-Forming Over Counter-Pressure Casting

The CH-R begins as a counter-pressure cast blank, where aluminium is drawn upward under vacuum into the mould, producing a denser grain structure than conventional gravity casting. The inner rim area is then flow-formed: heated and rolled under high pressure, the material is compacted further, aligning its grain and improving both tensile strength and fatigue resistance. The combination of these two processes produces a wheel that weighs less than a comparably sized cast product while meeting the structural demands of performance driving.

BBS CH-R Design

The CH-R's split-spoke design references the wheel geometry BBS developed for GT and touring car racing, where wide spoke surfaces and angled transitions create a face that reads as dynamic even at rest. The spoke faces are back-milled to remove material without affecting structural paths, and the stainless-steel rim protector adds a practical edge-protection detail that is visible as a design element as well as a functional component.
