The Geometry That Fills the Face
Cross-spoke wheels have a long history in motorsport - the arrangement maximises face area while maintaining airflow to large brake assemblies. The BBS CX-R is the modern evolution of that idea. Its overlapping spoke pairs create a visually dense face that reads as intricate from close up and purposeful from a distance. It is a wheel that references BBS's racing heritage while being engineered for the road.
Flow-Forming from Motorsport Development
The CX-R is produced using BBS's low-pressure casting process, followed by flow-forming of the rim well - a technology the brand developed from its Formula 1 programmes. During flow-forming, the cast blank is heated and rolled under high pressure, compacting the material and aligning its grain structure. This process increases the strength of the barrel by up to 30% compared to a conventional casting, while reducing weight. The CX-R also features back-milled spokes, a CNC process that removes material from the lateral areas of the spokes that are not required for stability. The result is a wheel that is both lighter and stronger than its cast equivalent.
The CX-R Design
The CX-R's stepped spoke design is its defining feature. The spokes are arranged in a two-dimensional pattern that creates a different appearance at every viewing angle. The face is visually dense, but the back-milled spokes and flow-formed barrel ensure that this density does not come at the cost of performance.
