The Alloy That Sets It Apart
Most performance wheels are built from the same handful of aluminium grades. The BBS RI-D is not. Its monoblock construction begins with extra-super duralumin - an aerospace-grade alloy developed for applications where strength-to-weight is the only metric that matters. The result is a wheel that weighs as little as 7.4 kg in its lightest configuration, yet carries the structural integrity that high-end platforms demand. It is not simply light. It is engineered to be light without compromise.
Where Flow-Forming Meets Aerospace Material
The RI-D sits within the BBS Forged Line - the brand's flagship platform, produced at BBS Japan using a multi-stage flow-forming process. Each wheel begins as a billet of extra-super duralumin, which is heated and flow-formed under extreme pressure to create a dense, fine-grained metal structure. This process compacts the alloy and aligns its grain structure, increasing strength and stiffness while reducing weight. The result is a one-piece wheel that delivers a stiffness-to-weight ratio well beyond what a conventional casting can achieve. BBS developed the RI-D in 2011 as its first wheel forged from duralumin, and no replica producer has access to the tooling or the thermal treatment process.
The RI-D Design
The RI-D's defining feature is its five cross-spoke pattern - slender arcs that flow from a deep, rounded centre and radiate outward toward the rim. The design is deliberately restrained rather than aggressive, which is why it has become a reference point for high-end vehicles from BMW M5 to Ferrari 458. The spokes are arranged to create a sense of movement even when the wheel is stationary, and the face is visually balanced without being busy. It is a design that reads as luxurious from every angle, and correct from every distance.
